Project Description
The Context & challenges of the site, determined the project and the residence was designed to reflect the intimate relationship with the topography and external views.
Located off the Service Road of one of the major connecting Ring Roads in the City, the topographical conditions of the Site had very steep slope of around 5.0 mts from the approach road on east side to the rear on west side. The road in itself has around 2.4 mts slope from end to another end in a distance of 14.6 mts. The entire site was nothing short of a Stone quarry. The west side had a High Voltage electrical line not too far and was overlooking the Serene Green Cover of the Bangalore University & Bannerghatta Eco Zone visible at higher Levels. The Clients primary requirement was twin residences, one for their Parents & another for the client with similar facilities along with dedicated Covered Carparking space.
With all the above Challenges for an East Facing 240.0 Sq. Mts of Modest site area, the Clients who are a Doctor Couple approached us skeptically, asking us whether they should even consider constructing a Residence in the Site or Dispose and look for a more suitable property. Accepting the challenge, we embarked on a design of exploring all the possibilities & context of the site.
Since, the rear side was facing an Outer Ring Road, the visibility of the Residence as well as the aesthetics had to be dealt sensibly. This side was also facing the West Sun & Vehicular Traffic. The Front side was the routine residential suburb and facing East. Both sides had to be treated Contextually as well as Climatically & that reflects well in the massing & Façade treatments. Hence while the west had the contrasting Views of the Green & Traffic, at lower levels, we created Landscaped Courtyards and blank Facades to Compensate for the west Sun, Electric Lines & the Vehicular movements. With this the Landscaped courts & green walls became part of the interiors & enhanced the quality of the space.
At Higher levels, once we rose above the Ground, the Ring Road & Electric lines were eluded. Open Terraces were located with overhangs for the views of the Greenery as well as the Scenic Sun set. For an 8000 Sq. Ft Super Built up area residence designed to meet all the needs and characteristics of the family, the project's premise was to bring contemporary style of the owner’s requirement, combined with comfort and practicality of everyday life. The idea was developed from visuals of the surroundings, in addition to great challenge of designing a house with an extensive program of needs from a Steep Sloping land and other challenges, in addition to meeting several legal conditions & basic Vastu Principles.
