Project Description
The client was very clear in the brief saying, that they wanted traditional court yard house (MALNAD MANE) concept, styled contemporarily to suit their current life style. The house had to be Vastu compliant in many ways. With courtyard being the pivotal, all other functions were designed to wrap around this Skylit courtyard housing the staircase core which was designed both as aesthetic feature and also as a light shaft to the entire house. The form is purely a resultant of Function.
The resultant plan of this three storied house is ‘O’ shaped, embracing courtyard. The language employed is contemporary while incorporating Traditional response to Tropical monsoon climate. All functions open into a central courtyard with circulation corridor all-around, making the core very effective.
The plan was organized in such a way that all the Public & Semi Public spaces like Living, Dining, Kitchen are in Ground Floor and Private and Semi Private spaces Like Bedrooms, AV room, Bar are in Upper levels.
The Semi covered Puja was specifically designed in North East-Corner as per Vastu over fishpond with Glass/stone flooring, at lowest level to create a Zen kind of feeling.
Sectionally the site Towards the NE was lowered for Vastu as well as privacy reason to have a Water body with Landscaped court for Private events.
Most of the major details like Staircase, wooden corridors, flooring pattern etc and such other decisions happened at site in the form of Mock ups and vendor interactions.
Sensitivity towards Texture and color of landscape influenced the expressive choice of wide range of materials. While large, precisely crafted Wooden windows enhance the notion of transparency, surgically fitted surface weathered cut stone in courtyard makes for a powerful yet, sensual balance.
